Abu Dhabi, UAE: The Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs (MFNCA) has announced the launch of the ‘Electoral Culture Virtual Majlis’ – an initiative to enhance political awareness in UAE society.

Utilising the latest videoconferencing technology, the virtual majlis introduces the public to the UAE constitution through a series of remote interactive lectures that sees an elite group of legal and constitutional and experts speak to and engage directly with members of the public.

The first Electoral Culture Virtual Majlis, organised in conjunction with the office of His Highness Ruler of Fujairah, witnessed wide participation from Fujairah government employees. Delivered by Dr Ahmed Ali Al-Khuzaimi, member of the Fujairah Council for Education Care and Academic Affairs, the inaugural activity covered the UAE constitution’s adoption, its importance, and its development over the years to meet the aspirations of the UAE’s wise leadership and its citizens.

Commenting on the new venture, MFNCA Undersecretary His Excellency Tariq Hilal Lootah said: "With the launch of the activities of the Electoral Culture Virtual Majlis, the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs continues its mandate of delivering innovative initiatives through which it contributes to providing an integrated system of programms that target all segments of society across all regions of the country.

His Excellency affirmed that the Ministry was keen to utilise modern technology to reach out to the UAE citizenry, with the latest platforms opening the way for greater communication with the public, thereby enabling it to raise awareness of how members can participate politically and  actively contribute to the nation’s march towards the future.

His Excellency added: “The launch of the Electoral Culture Virtual Majlis represents a tangible step towards strengthening our efforts to involve UAE citizens in the political process. The launch of this virtual majlis is the result of the continuous efforts of the Ministry, which employs innovative approaches aimed at reaching all segments of society and developing within them a culture of political participation.

His Excellency Tariq Hilal Lootah thanked all the lecturers participating in the virtual majlis and commended them on their eagerness to contribute to the development of political life in the UAE. His Excellency also thanked the attendees at the sessions, their numbers an indication of the recognition within UAE community members of the importance of becoming acquainted with the UAE constitution and their participation in the comprehensive development process that the United Arab Emirates is witnessing.

Dr Ahmed Ali Al-Khuzaimi said: "The UAE constitution is a national document that clarifies the basic rules of political organisation in the country, detailing the legislative, executive and judicial competencies. It also affirms the freedoms, rights and public duties of citizens, and aims to advance the country on the global stage so that it takes its rightful place among the world’s leading nations."

He indicated that the UAE constitution has 152 articles establishing the basis of the UAE and the rights of citizens, and that it sets out the rules for the political and constitutional organisation of the state. He reiterated that it states the main purpose of the union, its constituents, and its objectives at the local and international levels, as well as clarifies the basic social and economic pillars of the union, emphasising freedoms, rights, and public duties.

Dr Al-Khuzaymi also explained that the UAE constitution has a special nature as a result of the federal form it has adopted, which creates a balance between the federal and local competencies of the emirates that are its members. He also touched on the federal authorities within the constitution, namely the Federal Supreme Council, the President and his deputy, the Federal Cabinet, the Federal National Council, and the federal judiciary, defining the nature of each authority and its role in building the Federal Constitution.

The schedule for the lectures, along with their topics and the speakers delivering them, will shortly be announced through the Ministry’s accounts on Instagram (mfnca) and Twitter (@mfnca).
